Introduction
The origins of the Hare Krishna movement can be traced through its 5,000-year-old historical chain of gurus, called a "disciplic succession." In Sanskrit, this succession is called the "guru parampara." From 5,000 years ago, until 1977, all of the gurus in the bona fide succession have always been spotless in character. In November of 1977, the "link in the guru chain," and founder of the Hare Krishna movement, His Divine Grace Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, passed away. Immediately after this event, Srila Prabhupada's leading secretaries (Governing Body Commission or GBC) formed what they have alleged to be "the continuation of the guru succession."
However, unlike all the of the previously pure gurus in the traditional succession, we have instead witnessed a constant stream of impure, deviant, even criminal activities manifesting amongst members of the post-1977 "guru lineage." The list of evil activities performed by members of the GBC's alleged "guru succession" is practically endless. We will name only a few prominent "guru" problems:
1)
homosexuality
2) pedophilia
3) wife stealing
4) homosexual nightclub visits
5) advocating condom use for gurus
6) females giving "massages"
7) intoxication with LSD, marijuana,
liquor, cigarettes
8) contrived ghost exorcism of gurus,
devotees and temples
9) encouraging stealing, smuggling,
drug dealing
10) trademark violations
11) racketeering
12) mail fraud
13) general illicit sexual affairs
with men, women and children followers
14) orchestrated banning, beatings
and murders of dissidents
15) orchestrating death threats
16) embezzlement, misuse of funds
17) alleged Mafia connections
18) living like kings while some
of the children in their schools were being starved, beaten and molested
19) using ISKCON funds for personal
use
20) allowing "Krishna's
cows" to be sent to slaughter
21) hiding, losing and/or modification
of Srila Prabhupadas works
22) perhaps poisoning of Srila Prabhupada,
as many now suspect, and as evidence suggests, and so on and so forth.
These problems have naturally generated considerable publicity, but were the persons involved in these activities ever gurus at all? And how did these "gurus" become designated as such in the first place? And why haven't the rank-and-file members of the Krishna religion done much of anything to correct these incredible and obvious deviations? Why are the founding fathers of almost all of these deviations still worshiped as if they are "as good as God" even today?
We do not wish to falsely criticize any member of the Krishna Consciousness movement. The authors of this paper have not lost sight of the tremendous service rendered by all devotees past and present, including some of the individuals referred to in this paper.
This essay is, by no means, a comprehensive account of all events that have taken place. Neither does it attempt to fully address all of the aspects of the profoundly deviated philosophical seeds which have sprouted such evil fruits. The primary purpose of this paper is to reestablish the purity and integrity of the original and pure guru succession, represented by its foremost proponent, His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. We also wish to submit some practical solutions to the numerous problems mentioned.
Dedication
To everyone's spiritual master, His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, a pure devotee of Krishna and a bona fide guru.
A few acknowledgments
Sulochana dasa.
First, we have to give the highest credit to Sulochana dasa, whose
assassination was orchestrated by some of the GBC's
"gurus" in 1986. He provided the authors of this document
with his first ever view of Srila Prabhupada's letters. These letters had been
purposefully hidden by GBC "gurus." Sulochana acted
as the "front line" soldier for the "dissenters,"
exposing the GBC's ever-expanding child molestation nests and so on and so forth,
and thus he probably accepted bullets which would have otherwise been aimed at
the author of this book. When both of us talked for the last time in May of 1986,
he said, "I will probably never see you
again, Puranjana."
Joeseph Sanchez.
A police officer with the Berkeley, CA, police department. What
can be said? The author of this document would almost certainly no longer be among
the living without his assistance. His analysis could neatly summarize this entire
book: "There was Srila Prabhupada, and then
there were those who thought they were Srila Prabhupada!"
The FBI.
The FBI worked very fast in solving Sulochana dasa's murder, and
they simultaneously uncovered details that the author of this document was "next
in line." They are to be highly commended for arresting the GBC's
"hit man" and halting a guru orchestrated murder plot
against the author, and probably others.

Advaita Acharya
The Gathering Storm (Up to 1978) Despite the phenomenal growth of the Krishna movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s, under the leadership of Srila Prabhupada, He privately warned of numerous potential dangers. In particular he warned of excesses, especially by those in the position of leadership.
Srila Prabhupada strongly desired a stable managing body to perpetuate his society. Similarly, in the 1930s, Srila Prabhupada's guru, namely Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura, had also tried to form a managerial "governing body" for his society, namely the Gaudiya Matha. Unfortunately, in both the 1930s and in the 1970s, these governing body members deviated by overstepping their authority. They artificially began to assume that they were not only their guru's "governing managers," but that they were also their guru's replacements or successors.
What is surprising is that the following instructions, indeed all of Srila Prabhupada's letters and conversations, were purposefully hidden by the GBC from the rank-and-file devotees. No discussion of their potential contents was allowed. Simultaneously, various GBC's began to plead, "Srila Prabhupada gave us insufficient instructions," although these letters and conversations were full of instructions. Then the GBC forwarded their "new Gaudiya Matha authority" in 1978 and began to introduce his deviant ideas. Naturally, these letters and conversations would have exposed that this "Gaudiya Matha connection" was unauthorized by Srila Prabhupada, so the GBC arranged to have the letters hidden and suppressed. Indeed, in 1985 the author of this document and our associate were threatened with death for distributing the letters. Soon after that, our associate was assassinated (May 22, 1986) and we were told by the police that we were "next on the list."
In March of 1990, the GBC even printed a document glorifying Tirtha, Madhava, and Sridhara Maharajas as "parampara acharyas," equal to Srila Prabhupada. As we will see herein, Srila Prabhupada's letters hardly support this notion. Small wonder the GBC suppressed these letters. In 1987, a small printing (500 copies) of the letters was made, without authority or support from the GBC. Meanwhile, they have produced many of their own books, magazines and tape ministries with ideas that are contrary to the letters and conversations that they suppressed. As we shall see, Srila Prabhupada issued plenty of warnings about these types of activities.
Note: The numbers "66" etc denote the year, i.e 66, 1966, and the subsequent numbers denote the item number.
66.01 FAILED Srila Prabhupada: "The Gaudiya Matha institution has failed." (Srila Prabhupada Letter [SPL] March 11, 1966) Note: The post 1930s Gaudiya Matha artificially made "gurus," exactly as the post-1977 GBC has done. This resulted in the dismantling of that institution into small, competing guru factions. |
67.01 ACHARYA IN THE CENTER Srila Prabhupada summarizes his original intent and purpose for his society: "I wish that every temple shall retain their independent identity and keeping the acharya [himself] in the center." (SPL February 11, 1967) Note: This instruction is Srila Prabhupada's simple master plan for His movement. It is still applicable today, more than ever. 67.02 ENVY Note: Kirtananda was later declared by the post-1977 GBC to be their best "new guru," despite the fact that it was known that Kirtanananda had a tendency to defy Srila Prabhupada, to be inclined to homosexuality, and that indeed he sometimes thought he was equal to, or perhaps better than, Srila Prabhupada. We can see why the GBC wanted the letters hidden. They could then prop up people like Kirtanananda as "pure devotees," and hide the fact that these folks were not actually trusted by Srila Prabhupada. 67.03 SRILA PRABHUPADA'S EQUAL? 67.04 LIP SERVICE 67.05 NO CONFIDENCE 67.06 DEVICES 67.07 MAYA Note: In 1994, some residents of Kirtanananda's "zone" have only just now been able to see the above quotes. The GBC's plan, to hide, suppress and deny Srila Prabhupada's actual quotes has effectively kept people "in the dark" about their alleged post-1977 "gurus." There were other instances where GBC's artificially concluded that they were already "gurus". For example, in January of 1975, Srila Prabhupada complained in a meeting of his senior GBC's that some of His leading men were already trying to become guru, even while He was still present. He warned them sternly that this should never be done. Later, in a May 27, 1977 conversation between Tamala Krishna, Bhavananda and Srila Prabhupada, it became very evident that some GBC's were still thinking of "who would be guru" after Srila Prabhupada's departure: Srila Prabhupada:
Not only property. Our prestige, our position ...Everything is envied.
Everywhere we are first class. Note: This is another conversation that was suppressed and not released to the devotees. It was only released in a limited printing in 1990. |
68.01 REINITIATION DENOUNCED Srila Prabhupada: "I am greatly surprised for Bon Maharaja's initiating you in spite of his knowing that you are already initiated by me. So it is a deliberate transgression of Vaishnava etiquette and otherwise a direct insult to me. I do not know why he has done like this, but no Vaishnava will approve of this offensive action..." (SPL March 3, 1968) Note: Sridhara Maharaja also began to "reinitiate" a number of Srila Prabhupada's disciples after His departure. He even provided new spiritual names. Similarly, after 1977, the GBC began drafting reams of "position papers" on the topic of "reinitiation" for ISKCON members, but it is clearly evident herein that the whole concept was never approved of by Srila Prabhupada. To sum, if someone is bogus, he could never have given spiritual initiation to another in the fist place. |
69.01 SRIDHARA MAHARAJA ENDORSED? The only written instruction where anyone was advised to seek shelter of Sridhara Maharaja (of the Gaudiya Matha) was written in January, 1969. Achyutananda dasa was, at that time, associating with Bon Maharaja, a Gaudiya Matha deviant "guru" who had homosexual tendencies and many other problems. Achyutananda dasa was ACTUALLY advised to go to Germany and serve Srila Prabhupada there. As a clearly less desirable second option, if he would refuse to do that, he should at least leave Bon Maharaja and stay with Sridhara Maharaja. Later, this letter was taken out of context as a "full endorsement" of Sridhara Maharaja as an authority by the GBC and others. 69.02 A RECOLLECTION 69.03 ADULTERATION Note: Srila Prabhupada was warning about the GBC's possible deviaton of selling items like jewelry, paintings, audio rock and roll records, bumper stickers, candles, and so on, and calling this "samkirtana" (congregational chanting of God's holy name) as has occured. 69.04 PURITY 69.05 GURU APPOINTMENT? Note: Similarly, the post-1977 ISKCON GBC has never produced any record of when they were "appointed as diksha gurus," successors, or acharyas, in the first place? Moreover, Srila Prabhupada condemned this "guru appointment" idea for a solid forty years. Worse, the post-1977 GBC went directly to a primary architect of the above-mentioned 1930s deviation for "philosophical advice." 69.06 USURPERS? |
70.01 SNAKE Srila Prabhupada: "I do not wish to go into all the details herein, but this [Gaudiya Matha alleged "successor guru"] Bon Maharaja may be considered as a black SNAKE and at the time of His disappearance, My Guru Maharaja, did not even wish to have him in His presence due the character of this Bon Maharaja..." (SPL January 31, 1969) 70.02 SINISTER MOVEMENT Note: Srila Prabhupada later credited some of his "fourth class ["guru"] Godbrothers from the Gaudiya Matha" for creating this "poisonous influence." 70.03 KEEP STANDARDS |
71.01 BOOKS FORBIDDEN Srila Prabhupada personally told us, in India, not to purchase any books from the Gaudiya Matha. Practically, He was almost crying. He said, "You do not know the proper etiquette to your Guru Maharaja, but you should not seek out any other authorities. This is an offense." He added, "This is spiritual prostitution." 71.02 COMPLAINTS 71.03 BE CAREFUL 71.04 FINAL AUTHORITY TREND? ROLE OF GBC DEFINED 71.05 FORMULA FOR ISKCON: |
72.01 A FARCE? Srila Prabhupada: "One thing, if we are not careful to always stick to the point of regulative principles and purest standards of high living, then everything will SPOIL very quickly and the whole show will be a FARCE." (SPL February 2, 1972) 72.02 DICTATING? 72.03 CENTRALIZATION Note: Some GBCs were planning to make a centralized legal and financial "umbrella corporation" in 1972. This idea very much upset Srila Prabhupada. All along he had wanted to keep the individual temple centers independent. Of course, soon after Srila Prabhupada's departure in 1977, the GBC immediately started their centralization plan again, with their autocratic zonal acarya system and later another form of "umbrella corporation," called "The ISKCON Foundation." 72.04 WILL THE GBC SPOIL EVERYTHING? 72.05 "CONTROLLING" TREND 72.06 LEGAL FORMULAS 72.07 DISTURBANCES? 72.08 IMPORTANCE OF MAINTAINING EXISTING DEVOTEES Note: Srila Prabhupada was always alarmed at the problem of people joining and then leaving Krishna consciousness, including many so-called big leaders, sannyasis and GBCs. He wanted to strengthen and train the existing men. However, after 1977, the GBC purposefully drove out 95 percent of "the existing men" so that they could have pliable and gullible "new men," to brainwash into their "we were appointed as Srila Prabhupada's successors" dogma. The result has been immature, schismatic and chaotic management. Many important projects have thus become stunted, rocked by scandals, bankrupted, halted, and in some cases even closed down permanently. 72.09 DISCOURAGED 72.10 DEPRESSION, REPRESSION AND COMPRESSION 72.11 SEEDS OF ZONAL ILLUSIONS AND GBC WARS? 72.12 RASCALS IN THE NAME OF VAISHNAVAS! 72.13 MASTER PLAN FROM THE VERY BEGINNING - DANGER OF CENTRALIZATION. IMPORTANCE OF INDEPENDENT

Srila Prabhupada had warned one of His senior disciples [a contributor to the ISKCON Journal of March 1990] in this connection. "What do we care for Madhava Maharaja or Damodara Maharaja. They are figs. We must be fixed. Just see; Madhava Maharaja is against us and he was supposed to be the greatest preacher." (SPL June 6, 1972) |
73.01 DEITY WORSHIP Srila Prabhupada: "The greatest danger to our movement will come when we manufacture and create our own process for worshiping the deities" (SPL January 3, 1973) Note: As subsequently seen after Srila Prabhupada's disappearance, the GBC concocted numerous unauthorized methods of worshiping the bona fide acharya, i.e., Srila Prabhupada, and thus the deities. 73.02 FUTURE DOUBTFUL 73.03 CHEATING WARNING 73.03 GAUDIYA MATHA BOOKS 73.04 NO OUTSIDE AUTHORITIES |
74.01 GBC POLITICS AND INTRIGUE Srila Prabhupada: "My request, therefore, is that you should become ideal men. If we fight… Now there is fighting amongst yourselves. That is a very great disappointment to me. The same politics, intrigues. Nature is so strong that the brain becomes, what is it called? Fag brain? The brain becomes deranged… Now POLITICS is coming in. As soon as we are getting money, POLITICS is coming in. That is a great concern." (Room Conversation [RC] with Srila Prabhupada April 31, 1974) 74.02 OPPRESSING GODBROTHERS Note: Srila Prabhupada started making more clear the potential parallels between his own GBC's deviations, and the actual deviations of the infamous 1930s Gaudiya Matha "imitation of guru fiasco." That is why the GBC borrowed their philosophy from the Gaudiya Matha to implement their imitation guru. 74.03 SRIDHARA, MADHAVA, TIRTHA MAHARAJA'S WARNING 74.04 GBC TITLE INSIGNIFICANT Note: A "GBC" title is not so significant. 74.05 ANOTHER GBC ACHARYA? Simultaneously, this woman began to claim that Bali Mardan was "the reincarnation of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura," citing Srila Prabhupada himself as the alleged source of this pronouncement. In short, it was and still is widely known that some GBC manifested the propensity to artificially claim to be "acharyas in the parampara," authorized by Srila Prabhupada himself. (SPL 11/74) RATIONALIZATION SEED 74.06 GBC FLICKERING Note: Three years later they were "eternal gurus," the sum total of all demigods? 74.07 GBC WHIMSICAL? 74.08 GBC CONSPIRACY? 75.01 TRINKET SALES HAVOC Srila Prabhupada: "I have considered the matter of [trinkets such as] record distribution and have decided that it should be immediately stopped. It has simply caused havoc. It should be stopped everywhere. The stress must be on books, nothing else needs to be sold." (SPL January 6, 1975) Note: Immediately after Srila Prabhupada departed, his alleged "guru successors" began selling all manner of trinkets including: Pope buttons, football stickers, Snoopy buttons, Hong Kong oil paintings, rock and roll and lewd audio records, and so on. There were also reports of "guru encouraged" drug selling, and some devotee "sellers and smugglers" were later on arrested. Here, Srila Prabhupada gives clear notice that He did not want these "trinket sales" in His movement. 75.02 EARLY GURU ATTEMPT 75.03 AMBITIOUS GBC? 75.04 GBC GREATER THAN GURU? 75.05 MACHIAVELLI? 75.06 FLAWS
UNDETECTED 75.07 ACTUAL PLATFORM |
76.01 EXPLOIT PROPERTY Herein, Srila Prabhupada identifies one of his "guru" Godbrother as a "sarpa" or snake-like man: "That is my ["guru"] Godbrother's ignorance. And this is regrettable, because they are POSING as Vaishnava. Ordinary men can do that, but they are dressing as Vaishnava and they are so envious. That Tirtha Maharaja, unnecessarily he was envious, whole life fighting, fighting, fighting in the court and died. Simply planning. ...Yes. He has no spiritual idea. Simply he wanted to exploit the property, that's all." (Srila Prabhupada conversation January 8, 1976) 76.02 ENVY OF GURU? In 1976 PD had been criticizing the then ever-expanding cheating (money shuffling) techniques encouraged by some GBC as "samkirtana." Some GBCs, such as Tamala Krishna, did not like this criticism. So he lied that PD was smoking pot, wearing a sari and leading a 'sahajiya' group in Los Angeles. Tamala Krishna even directly lied to Srila Prabhupada that PD was "working together with (the renegade) Nitai dasa and both of them had accepted a rascal sahajiya babaji guru from Vrindavana." PD was very alarmed by these false GBC concoctions, and so he wrote a letter to Srila Prabhupada explaining his side of the story. Srila Prabhupada's secretary at the time (PKS) then asked PD, "how did you like your nice reply letter from Srila Prabhupada?" (SPL response to PD) There was one major problem: PD had never received Srila Prabhupada's reply letter. Yet, both PD and Srila Prabhupada were in Los Angeles at that time. Obviously, some deviant GBCS had hid the reply letter. They were already "manipulating Srila Prabhupada's words" to suit their devious purposes. Not too surprisingly, a short while later, Srila Prabhupada again criticized these "cheating samkirtana" techniques. 76.03 CHEATING FORBIDDEN 76.04 INTERNAL SPOILING? 76.05 "KILLING ONE'S GURU" WARNING 76.06 GBCs MAY GO 76.07 "KILL GURU" WARNING "They did not even consider common sense that if guru maharaja had wanted to APPOINT somebody as acharya, why he did not say? He said so many things and this point he missed? The main point? And they insisted on it. They declared, 'Come on unfit persons to become acharya,' then another man comes, then another, then another. So better to remain a foolish person perpetually to be directed by Guru Maharaja. So that is perfection. And as soon as it was announced that, 'Guru maharaja is dead, now I am so advanced that I can KILL my guru and become [guru]'...then he is finished." (Srila Prabhupada conversation August 15 1976) Note: The above is a perfect description of the post-1977 ISKCON GBC deviation. First of all, they artificially claimed that Srila Prabhupada had appointed them to be his "successor acharyas." Doubters were excommunicated, some were even killed. And as the GBC's first wave of "rascals posing as guru" became exposed, they simply appointed "another man and then another man" to become guru, exactly as the Gaudiya Matha's deviants did. The current status in ISKCON is so much degraded that persons who have been exposed as having illicit sex with men, women and children, are still considered as "persons who are components of the bona fide eternally pure guru parampara." Worse, the first wave of post-1977 deviants certified the next wave of gurus by their "rubber stamp." The GBC insists on it. Yet Srila Prabhupada called all of this "killing the guru." |
77.01 WEAPONS AGAINST BROTHERS Srila Prabhupada: "These [artificial claims to be a guru] are weapons. That was the only endeavor, how he [Tirtha Maharaja] could legally occupy the bricks and stones of the Gaudiya Matha. That's all. He has no other ambition. It was simply show. But real purpose was to occupy, how to take the whole property. BUSINESS." (Srila Prabhupada conversation January 13, 1977) Note: In their March 1990 "ISKCON Journal," the GBC exalted Tirtha Maharaja to the same status as Srila Prabhupada. Meanwhile, some of the other very elderly and senior Gaudiya Matha members now agree that the current GBC has done what Tirtha Maharaja had done: the GBC gurus have made "a commercial business" of ISKCON or Srila Prabhupada's movement. 77.02 VERY
DANGEROUS |
A FEW MORE GAUDIYA MATHA QUOTES AND WARNINGS
Srila Prabhupada also indirectly compares the "guru"
Tirtha Maharaja to the demon Ravana in his Srimad-Bhagavatam.
(SB 5.18.22) "We have seen that one of the disciples
of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura wanted to enjoy the property of his spiritual
master, and the spiritual master being merciful toward him, gave him the temporary
property, but not the power to preach the cult of Caitanya Mahaprabhu all over
the world. That special mercy of the power to preach is given to a devotee
who does not want anything material from his spiritual master but wants only to
serve him. The story of the demon Ravana illustrates this point."
The Gaudiya Matha "acharyas" generally are called "self-interested fools" in the Caitanya Caritamrita. (CC Adi-Lila 2.76) "Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami, at the time of his passing away, ordered all of his disciples to work conjointly to preach the mission of Caitanya Mahaprabhu all over the world. Later, however, some self-interested, foolish disciples disobeyed his orders. Each one of them wanted to become head of the mission and they fought in the courts, neglecting the order of the spiritual master, and the entire mission was defeated. We are not proud of this, but the truth must be explained. We believed in the words of our spiritual master and started in a humble way- in a helpless way- but due to the spiritual force of the order of the supreme authority, this movement has become successful" (Sri Caitanya-Caritamrta Adi-Lila 7.95-96)
Some Gaudiya Matha gurus are also indirectly described as "disciples of Kali-yuga." "Unfortunately in this age of Kali there are many mundane persons in the dress of Vaishnavas, and Srila Bhativinoda Thakura has described them as disciples of Kali. He says, kali-cela. He indicates that there is another Vaishnava, a pseudo-Vaishnava with tilaka on his nose and kunthi beads around his neck. Such a pseudo-Vaishnava associates with money and women and is jealous of successful Vaishnavas. Although passing for a Vaishnava, his only business is earning money in the dress of a Vaishnava. Bhaktivinoda Thakura, therefore says that such a pseudo Vaishnava is not a Vaishnava at all but a disciple of Kali-Yuga. A disciple of kali cannot become an acarya by the decision of some high court. Mundane votes have no jurisdiction to elect a Vaishnava acarya. A Vaishnava acarya is self-effulgent and there is no need for any high court judgement. A false acarya may try to override a Vaisnava by a high court decision, but Bhaktivinoda Thakura says that he is nothing but a disciple of Kali-Yuga." Sri Caitanya-Caritamrta Madhya-Lila 1.220
This is merely a sampling, there are hundreds of similar quotes. Many important points are made. Here are a few: The GBC had a tendency to replace spontaneous Krishna Consciousness with "legal" formulas, as the Gaudiya Matha did. The GBC had a tendency not to openly discuss their insidious plans with the general devotees, which fully ripened with their concocted guru appointment.
The GBC had a tendency to enact legislation and money manipulations without following established guidelines or obtaining Srila Prabhupada's approval. Srila Prabhupada directly doubts whether the management, as he expected it, will carry on after His departure. This doubt was openly expressed as a warning of the GBCs potential deviations. Indeed, the whole movement may be victimized and "spoiled by the GBC". This is what has actually happened.
The numerous warning/comparisons regarding the Gaudiya Matha indicated that Srila Prabhupada was warning that his whole movement would be completely spoiled, immediately especially if the GBCS would artificially pose themselves as gurus. Thus the GBC hid as many of the warnings as they could, and went ahead with their "we are now gurus" plan.
...being continued....
