Uprooting the weed seeds of material desire in our hearts by constant chanting‏

Srila Prabhupada describes the act of chanting Hare Krsna as having three phases of purification. The first is the offensive stage where we may not even know the 10 offenses or even actively try to stop making them. Included in this stage is when we actually do know the list by heart, and can say it daily, but still willfully or in ignorance commit any or all of the 10 offenses.

The Science of Accepting a Spiritual Master

Srila Prabhupada: Well, if he is bad, how can he become a guru? [Laughter.] How can iron become gold? Actually, a guru cannot be bad, for if someone is bad, be cannot be a guru. You cannot say "bad guru." That is a contradiction. What you have to do is simply try to understand what a genuine guru is. The definition of a genuine guru is that he is simply talking about God--that's all. If he's talking about some other nonsense, then he is not a guru. A guru cannot be bad.

"In this regard, Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura remarks that Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura and Śyāmānanda Gosvāmī, although not born in brāhmaṇa families, are accepted as bona fide spiritual masters because they were brāhmaṇas by qualification. "
